Why Urban Baker Co. Made Me Rethink Protein Bars

A box filled with assorted baked goods, including muffins and cookies, wrapped in parchment paper. The items include a chocolate muffin with chunks of chocolate, a poppy seed muffin, and several cookies with various textures and ingredients, like oats and chocolate chunks.

Visiting Connon’s Annual Winter Market in Waterdown this year was amazing!

But it became even more amazing when I stumbled upon Urban Baker Co., a local gem that I had to talk about. While Urban Baker Co. doesn’t operate from a storefront (instead working out of a commercial kitchen in Burlington), seeing their booth at the market felt like uncovering a hidden treasure. I later learned that they attend other markets and now I know why they’re such a hit!

Urban Baker Co. offers both a Healthy Line and a Traditional Line of baked goods. While I had the pleasure of trying their Healthy Line—featuring muffins, cookies, protein bars, and protein balls—the quality and taste of these items made it clear that their Traditional Line, which includes scones, cookies, biscotti and more, is likely just as delicious, if not better. Everything I tried was made with the finest ingredients, and the care they put into both presentation and flavour was evident from the first bite. It’s clear that Urban Baker Co. doesn’t just focus on health, but also on providing a full, indulgent experience for all their customers.

A Fresh Take on Protein

I’ll be honest—I usually avoid protein bars. Most are dry or overly processed and they just don’t appeal to me. But after trying Urban Baker Co.’s protein bars, I was completely surprised. These bars were fresh, packed with nuts and seeds, and had the perfect amount of sweetness. They were filling and made for a great meal replacement. The Dark Chocolate Coconut Almond Cranberry and Coconut Hemp & Pumpkin Seed Protein Bars were especially delicious.

Urban Baker Co. also offers protein in the form of protein balls. Among the many flavors, The Coconut Lemon Pistachio Protein Ball was a standout for me. It had the perfect balance of chewiness and crunch, with the right mix of sweetness and texture.

Cookies, Muffins, and the Nutty Crunch

The cookies and muffins were equally impressive. The Zucchini Chocolate Chunk Muffin and Lemon Banana Poppyseed Muffin had the perfect texture, and the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie had the right balance of chewy and crisp edges. But my second favorite item was definitely the Nutty Crunch—sweet, crunchy, and packed with caramel and nutty flavours. It was the perfect snack.

A Fun Winter Market Adventure

The experience wasn’t just about the food—it was also about the people. The Urban Baker team was friendly, attentive and made the experience feel even more special. I left the market feeling like I had supported a local business that cares about quality and nutrition.
